Anemia of chronic disease is the most frequent anemia in hospitalized patients. High ferritin levels usually point to excess iron and acute or chronic inflammation. Common causes of high ferritin are obesity, heavy drinking, and inflammation. The main genetic cause is hemochromatosis.
